Patient – Transplantation

Hospital Vall d’Hebron is one of the most important University Hospitals of Barcelona, with 1100 beds. At the nephrology department there are 12 staff members and 8 residents. The transplant unit performs between 90 and 120 transplants per year. Main areas of research are related with the study of surveillance biopsies and outcome, histological findings in renal biopsies and systemic inflammation and endothelial dysfunction.

We have also been working on tolerance markers and on the utility of microarrays in the evaluation of surveillance biopsies. The nephrology department has their own clinical trial unit. The clinical trial unit has 3 full time nurses, 1 partial time PhD and 1 partial time MD. The number of transplants per year is ca. 100.
